I was a very fond of last year’s match, seeing Chris Jericho return to start it off was awesome, and though I would love to see him do it again or even possibly see an Undertaker return, I want to take a moment to discuss some of the stars I would love to see that enter the rumble and make my night.
I apologize to the person who asked me to include Scott Steiner here, I cannot.
In my dream world, there are wrestlers in other promotions that are working under loose enough contracts that they could potentially be brought on for one night. Former WWE talents like Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, and Bobby Lashley would get a decent pop for some of the longtime fans, but the biggest name that might see me throwing my chicken wings would be a one night WWE appearance by the phenomenal one, AJ Styles. It will not happen, but I am allowed to dream.
Realistically though, there are just some names that are on good terms with WWE, or even currently working for them, that could pop up and be a neat surprise. Evan Bourne has been begging for a return, but I am not sure that would even be worth commenting on. I would almost rather they send out JTG, so I can see all of the surprised faces go, “oh yeah, he does work for them!” Why do that though when they could have the entire arena chanting, “R-V-D!” In case that does not happen though, I would certainly take a surprise MVP or John Morrison return. I think that is because I want Kofi Kingston and Morrison to try to one-up each other on close call eliminations.
Some other good pops for people that will most likely be backstage anyway would be Booker T or the Brooklyn Brawler, both can still go short stints in the rumble, or maybe Arn Anderson, Steamboat, or even a return to the ring for Jerry Lawler, something easy and low impact. These are not real contenders obviously, but just fun. Also, I am not sure what kind of condition he is in, but what old school WCW fan would not pop if Dean Malenko came through those curtains for one last ride? A lot of realistic possibilities here that I doubt audiences will see.
Finally, what Royal Rumble is complete without a few surprises, legends, and a heart-felt moment? I can only think of one man that would fill all three of those categories, and that would be Jake “The Snake” Roberts. His recent return on Old School Raw might not make it as much of a surprise as it could have been, but as many have proclaimed, the redemption story would be well worth it. I would pop for him coming out and just looking badass, even if he only eliminated one person, as long as he hits that DDT at least once. Also, how cool would it be if he and DDP were both in the rumble? It is a nice dream. I think whatever WWE does and is able to pull together will be great, even if it does not reflect this article at all. I cannot wait.
